Thank you so much!
I am on day 3 post op and really wish that RUclips would place this kind of video higher up in the search results. No "do this simple exercise" etc, just you guys talking and discussing how things are going. I am already panicking over the time I spend in bed or on the couch. I am doing rehab exercises down on the floor 4 times per day and only have paracetamol and some other long lasting NSAID to help with the inflammation. It's crazy how much of a difference there can be for people in terms of pain, swelling etc. Anyways, I am rambling. Thank you so much for sharing this, I'll be looking at the rest of your videos too and just so that you know, it's extremely helpful and appreciated that you've done these videos!
I am so glad to hear this has been helpful! Definitely check out the 4 month post op update, and the 1 year post op update. I (Steven) am about to have this same surgery, and it is crazy the difference from surgeon to surgeon. Valan's surgeon didn't want her to use a hip brace, and my surgeon does want me to use one. We wish you a speedy recovery!
Amazing.Good job.I hope your Doc.is just as good
Thanks for all your videos. I’m up here in Leadville for the Lead Challenge right now. Just did the marathon. Silver Rush this upcoming weekend. Love the insight you provide into the race and emotions throughout. Very helpful!
So glad the videos were helpful! How did the marathon go?
@@UltraTrailSteven it went good despite doing it on tired legs. My goal was to be around 5 hours and I was within a few minutes. 🤘
@@alludwig awesome! Good luck at the 50!
Hi, great video. Would you recommend the adv 12l for 3 nights, fastpacking TMB ?
Yes if you pack well
“Setup is a breeze” hahaha classic dad joke
lol someone caught that!
Great review, thanks! How do you compare this to the mafate speed 4? Do they complement each other or are they too similar? I have that one and love it. But I’m looking for a second pair for my rotation and the Speedgoat 6 looks and sounds as a great option.
I compared them to the MS4 a couple of times in this video. Very similar in the midsole. A bit more narrow tho
Is it compatible with spotify? Without having to bring the phone?
No. You cannot store music on the phone, and there is no cellular service with the watch to stream.
This guy did a lot of complaining about the price on a free pair of shoes He received lol
Wow it looks very good. I saw my colleague using this product before and he highly recommended it. I just placed an order and Amazon shows that it will arrive tomorrow. Really looking forward to it!
Awesome!
This product is an absolute life saver in the summer, I'm a soccer coach and the summer is so hard, until I got the AICE 3 everything has been so much better, I never overheat or sweat a lot anymore! Of the several products I've tried, including other brands, it has the most powerful cooling ability and the largest battery, which are the two most important to me. Definitely recommend it, and after watching this video it suddenly occurred to me that I can buy another one for my wife because she has hot flashes, this is definitely the best gift.
Glad you like it too!
Please 🙏 do a review of the new Suunto Race S it just came out and I’m really looking into buying it based on its improved features.
It’s incredibly similar to the Race. Just a bit smaller, less storage for maps, and less battery life.
@@UltraTrailSteven I’ve read it has 32gb of storage so not less, and a smaller battery yes. However I’ve also heard it has improved heart rate tracking with double the sensors that have been updated and they have improved the overall performance of the device. Less scrolling lag. Which is why I wanted you to review it…
@@RichardTorresOfficial yes definitely better heart rate! Hopefully I can do a review
Amazing video! This gives me the motivation to get back out there and run. I quit trail running after DNF at Lake Sonoma 50 with no crew. Keep on running! Thank you for the inspiration to run again.
Thank you! I am glad we could help inspire you to get out again! Keep hitting those trails!
How would these be as a trail hiker for something like Mt.Whitney? I plan to go when it’s dry.
Well Mt. Whitney is rocky, but with a hiking pace they should be ok.
Great video! I apreciate your medical situation right now and know you've sqeezed these runs out for this review. I just think you should mention your milage (22 miles) and the fact that this is a limitation of your formed opinion on the shoes. Especially since you mention rubbing in the previous version while wearing it in a 48h race and compare this directly with the new version. Things i personally find very important (fit issues with long efforts, durability of the midsole, durability of the outsole) are unfortunatly hard to comment on after a couple of short runs. It's totally okay to not run hundreds of miles in a shoe before you give your opion! But I think mentioning the milage and lenght of runs is very important information for the viewer to place a review into context.
Fair points. However, when you’ve been reviewing shoes as long as I have (4 years), and been wearing Hoka’s for 7 years, you get a really good sense for a shoe very quickly.
What’s the name of the ice thing I’m just using hip ice wraps the gave me and I don’t have the toilet thing.

I’m going on day 3 I can’t do anything in too much pain. I’m not sure what she had but I had a very large labrum tear, bursectomy of two bursas and release of ITB. I was also left like this for 23 years i was disabled from it. No Dr would listen since I was 22 I’m 45 now all my dreams were stolen. I still don’t know if this is the only thing wrong I won’t know if I’m cured for a while post op.
Wishing you a speedy recovery!
@@UltraTrailSteven Thank you
I just picked up running this summer. I usually dont run more than 10k. but you sold me on this one... looks like i want to make running a habit so this will coming handy one day when i decide run half marathon or even ultra. :D :D :D
Good choice!
I have 20 miles in the 6 so far. Here's my take, the fit is definitely better, not as sloppy as the 5. The midsole is firmer, not as cushy as the 5. The tongue is better padded than the 5 but still too short and not padded enough. Would it kill Hoka they give an extra quarter inch of material on the tongue. In my opinion the best versions of the Speedgoat were the 2 and 3. They both had a great midsole and nice big padded tongue. I have a Speedgoat 3 with about 300 miles on it and the midsole still feels better than a brand new 6. I've been wearing Speedgoats since version 1. I think it's time I look for a new shoe. Better than the 5? Yes. Best version? Definitely not.
Good insight! I really liked the Speedgoat 2 as well. Maybe give the Mafate Speed 4 a try
@@UltraTrailSteven Thanks, that's what I was thinking.
@@UltraTrailSteven It looks like the Mafate Speed 4 is my go to shoe now. I have about 30 miles on them and all is good. It reminds me a lot of the Speedgoat 2 and 3 and the Evo Speedgoat. Thanks for the recommendation!! 👊
@@chrisx2186 awesome! So glad you like them!
Can’t believe you did the whole video without realizing you’re wearing your wife’s shorts
Lmao best comment yet!
You recommend these for the Leadville 50 or Leadville 100? Thank you
Definitely! They would do well for both
It's Vibrum or nothing for me from now on. I have a few shoes without Vibrum and they are just too slick when it's wet. I never have traction issues in any conditions with Vibrum. I've still got a pair of Speedgoat 3 EVO's and 4's that I'm putting miles on but I was curious what the latest version is like.
Definitely recommend giving the SG6 a try. Love the Vibram megagrip
Hi Steven, hope your hip is doing good? Lovin the content. I haven’t tried the Speedgoat 6 but had a couple of pairs of the 5, then I got hold of a pair of Merrell Agility Peak 5, and they completely blew the 5’s away. Everything about that shoe was superior to the Hoka and can’t wait for their next iteration. When it comes out a shootout between the Hoka 6 and the Merrell 6 is a must!
I’ll have to try and get my hands on a pair when I can run again
Thank you so much for posting this!!! I have a labrum tear and waiting to see what the plan of action is after physical therapy has not helped. This was so informative and out my mind at ease about what could potentially come my way.
So glad it was helpful!
Sucks that insurance is making you waste more time but great to see you running and smiling
Yeah complete waste of time and money
Whats the main difference to Mafate speed 4?
Mafate Speed 4 has a bit more protection on the tongue from the lacing system, isn't as narrow in the midfoot, plus the MS4 has the Profly + midsole, and the VIbram Megagrip LItebase compound.
@@UltraTrailSteven Which one has more durability in the outsole?
@@iNextGFX they are both Vibram. The MS4 is the light base version. Both last about the same in my experience
Have the 965 absolutely fantastic watch but the pace 3 is definitely catching my eye
It is a great watch (Both are)
Great review Steven! I'm excited to give the Speedgoat 6 a go after your review.
Thanks, Chad! They are great! Hopefully your foot is a bit more narrow than mine in the midfoot.
I had this done end of January 2024. I’m 5 months out now and finished PT a couple weeks ago. I’m in the gym 3-4 days a week and am in pretty good shape. I’m not doing much running now, a mile here and there on treadmill. Mostly stationary bike and elliptical. I’m having some light grinding in my knee that wasn’t there before the surgery and my inner thigh groin area has some occasional clicking (feels like maybe a muscle or tendon is binding). I’m just curious if Valan Had similar issues at 5-6 months.
Glad your recovery seems to be going well. No, Valan didn’t have any grinding or anything in the knees. Some occasional soreness in the groin, but that was due to strength training.
My next shoe! THX Time to Fly! 👍🏼💯⛰️
Awesome!
@@UltraTrailSteven I got them and have 10 miles in them already. Not as comfy as my sandals but def more cush. I'm loving them and all for the reasons you pointed out. ROCK ON!
@@UltaPowderfinger awesome!
Dude you‘re amazing 🙌 Uploading new shoe reviews even if you‘re injured 🔥💪 You‘re doing so well
Ha thanks! Well unfortunately the shot wore off quickly so back to cycling.
@@UltraTrailSteven Finding your new 100% 🔥🙌 That‘s all about 👌 Goggins would be proud of you because you stay hard 💪
I recently did a 50 mile ultra marathon with my Apple Watch Ultra Series 1. I turned off, mobile, WIFI and Bluetooth and set the colour grey scale (always on display also off). But not in lower mode. I ran the race in 10h 36min and my watch barely made it.... it had 3% left when crossing the finish and with about 10km to go I had to put in the lower mode (full GPS).
Yikes! Cutting it close!
Pretty impressive that you jumped into 10 miles after that much time off!
Felt ok except for the heart rate lol
Amen Sir…keep freaking grinding! Love it!
Thanks
Which setting is dual frequency on the Suunto race?

@@UltraTrailSteven Just figured it out,thanks!
Hi, I really liked your review, I think it was as fair as possible, congratulations, for me it would be Coros for its platform.
Thank you so much! I do like the COROS ecosystem better as well
@@UltraTrailSteven Yeah ! I like the ecosystem because it greatly simplifies how you are improving, it is also very easy to schedule training. I personally use the Vertix 2s and it is very accurate
You should see if you can try to do some platelet rich plasma injections. Helped my husband with his shoulder.
Yeah I talked with my surgeon about PRP, but with the deformity on my femoral head, we felt surgery was the best option.
@@UltraTrailSteven Well wishes and a speedy recovery!!
Balls!
Yep
@@UltraTrailSteven For all it's worth I got achilles tendinitus (spelling I know) last February. Managed to finish ths Ice Age 50 mile off of the winters base training and PT. I'm currently able to run although it will be at least another 10 months before goin' some serious miles. In the meantime .. what do I do? I will get healthy. I'll remember the pain I went through. I'll get back no matter what. You will too. Take it slow and use this time as I know you will. Much love my fellow crazy.
@@paulbuchanan9914 thanks! I hope you recover well!
Thank you for the video! Very informative! One question…are the trails there as narrow as they appear?
Yes they are very narrow in places.
@@UltraTrailSteven thank you
Again…thank you for the info and your willingness to share. I am going to do this hike this coming weekend, do I need a parking pass at Newfound Gap? Also, it appears the trail is marked fairly well, is that accurate? Thank you.
@@timanderson572 the trail is marked very well. I’m not sure about a parking permit in the Smokey’s. However, you will need to get to newfound gap before 9am if you want a parking spot
@@UltraTrailSteven understood. I plan to get there at sunrise. Traveling from Ohio on Friday, to do it on Saturday. Using it as part of my Grand Canyon Rim to Rim training which I’m doing in late August.
My first watch was a Garmin, then I change for Suunto, mainly because of the good quality of the materials.
Nice!
Nice comparison. Have you used the Vertical? If so, how do you think it compares to the Race?
Thank you. No, I have not tried the Vertical yet.
@@UltraTrailSteven ok thanks.
What a great video. Hoping one day I'll be able to run this race.
Thank you! Keep applying or try volunteering first!
Personal note….at mile 191 of Tahoe 200, my Garmin Enduro 2 crashed and lost all data. This video came at a perfect time as I have forever lost faith in Garmin 👍
OMG! Thats horrible! For a 200 mile race, personally I will be using the COROS VERTIX 2 or 2S.
Every computer (and that's what these things are) can crash. I doubt you can judge Garmin by one faulty unit. I've read a lot of bad reviews about the Coros app. I'm currently using the Huawei Fit 3 as my main running watch. Of course I'm not an ultra runner. But for my daily 10k round it's perfect. Does everything I want and connection to the phone never failed so far. And you can load music onto it via BT.
@@MrSeedi76 yeah but on the one run you want it to work not only for data but for gpx next turn to keep you on course, if it fails, you lose faith and you judge. I’m not doing 10k’s. I’m doing multi day hundred milers. When you spend 1000 usd on a watch, it should work, every time.
The same happened to my Forerunner 955 at about mile 130 in a race a couple months ago. It was caught in a reboot loop and I didn't have they luxury of cell service/clear head to troubleshoot a solution at the time.
I see you wear the Ultra - is that your daily driver? I’ve been wanting to try the Race. I love my Ultra, but it just falls short in the running watch world of capabilities.
Yes the AWU2 is my daily. I LOVE the smart features like being able to text, make phone calls, and pay for things from the watch. It does a good job for running with the WorkOutdoors app, but not for ultras.
Great review! I have a question about battery life while navigating How would you compare battery life while using navigation? I estimate my 100-mile time to be around the 30 hour mark. I won't have the maps screen on for long periods of time, mainly just for turn by turn alerts. Does using turn by turn greatly decrease battery life compared to the advertised capacity? And how would these two compare to the garmin fenix 7 in the same map battery life conversation as I have seen sales recently that bring them down to $450, so comparable to the MSRP of the watches you reviewed. Thank you for any info!
Well I know the APEX 2 Pro can last 28 hours in all systems on mode with a gpx route and navigation, because that’s what I used at Leadville. I have not tested the Suunto Race in a 100 mile race. However, if you use the maps only for turn by turn, then I would think it should be fine. If you leave the bright maps on all the time, then that will definitely reduce the battery life. I’m not sure about the Fenix 7.
@@UltraTrailSteven Thank you so much!
In my testing the suunto race lasts about 16hours on the map screen, sent it back and swapped for the vertical. I'd think the coros vertix 2 would be fine too. It's just that bright screen on the race that kills the battery. Shame it's a thing of beauty@@justinhongphotography
@@robturner724 Thank you so much! That’s great info, I appreciate it.
I have the Coros Apex -- first version -- it up until recently and has been a great watch -- going on 4 years -- That being said, the latest app update really screwed me over. Apparently, there isn't enough storage on the watch to configure properly with the app, so when I do trail runs specifically my "training load" is way off. The app always shows my training as low effort? Which in turn screws up my weekly stats and my training. I contacted Coros, and they knew this was a problem and basically told me "Oh well" After watching your review and the comparable review between this and the Apex 2 pro I am switching watches. Thank you very much
That’s a bummer! So you have the Apex 46mm? I had that for a few years too. Storage was definitely a limiting factor.
@@UltraTrailSteven yes, pisses me off they didn't tell me that before updating the app, what would you recommend the 16 (steal) or 32 (titanium)
@@PEPSEP both would be great. The 16gb is plenty of storage for maps. Just depends on if you want a lighter weight watch
I'm an Aussie (ultra runner) living in China, and also tried this experiment (but not with this brand). Right now I've been wearing no-brand runners for less than USD$10 a pair, and they're awesome! Like you say, not AS great as a top-model from a top-brand, but hell, not far off them either. Certainly good enough to train on. Basic facts on them. * I've used them for the past 5 years * My milage is usually 100km per week * I get around 400-500km off each pair before they're too flat * I'm 54 and have glass legs (especially shins), but haven't had injury issues running in these.
That’s awesome! Glad to hear it!
